About Roof Shingles

Roof shingles are a type of roof covering made up of separate, overlapping components. These components are typically flat, rectangular shapes that are arranged in upward courses, each of which overlaps the joints beneath it, starting at the bottom edge of the roof. The roof rafters support shingles, which can be made of a variety of materials including wood, slate, flagstone, metal, plastic, and composites consisting of fiber cement and asphalt. The term “tiles” is still frequently used to describe ceramic roof tiles, which are still common throughout Europe and some regions of Asia. Compared to wall shingles, roof shingles may decay more quickly and require higher water resistance. In the US, they are a widely used roofing material.

Types Of Roof Shingles

Asphalt shingles

Asphalt shingles made of fiberglass are by far the most popular roofing material used for residential roofing in the United States. They are far less prevalent and known as tile strips or bitumen roof shingles in Europe. They are simple to install, reasonably priced, durable for 20 to 60 years, and in certain places recyclable. There are different designs and colors for asphalt shingles.

While wood shingles are shielded by natural oils in the cellulose structure of the material, paper and fiberglass asphalt shingles are largely protected by long-chain petroleum hydrocarbons. These oils soften over time in the hot heat, and when it rains, the oils are gradually wiped off the shingles. Eaves and intricate rooflines receive more water during rain, which makes them more vulnerable to erosion than other locations.

Over time, the loss of the oils leads the wood and asphalt shingles to deteriorate and shrink, exposing the nail heads underneath. Once the nail heads are exposed, water from the roof may seep into the building along the nail shank, causing the roof’s supporting elements to deteriorate and interior ceilings and paint to become damaged by damp.

Wood Shingles

Shakes and shingles are the two main classifications of wood shingles. Generally speaking, wood shakes are longer and thicker than wood shingles. The fundamental distinction is in the method of construction, with shakes typically being split, at least on one side, whereas shingles are always sawn. Due to the fact that a wood shake is split with the grain of the wood rather than being sawn against it like a shingle, it frequently has a more textured appearance. Untreated wood shakes and shingles have long been recognized as a fire risk and have been outlawed in a number of locations, especially in metropolitan areas where combustible external building materials are a major cause of destructive fires known as conflagrations. A Class B fire rating can be attained using modern pressure-impregnated fire retardant treated wood shakes and shingles.

Torching, or applying a mortar fillet beneath the slates to secure them to the battens, is a typical repair method for slate roofs.
