Roland W. Biography
Roland W., whose real name was Roland Wächtler, was born on April 3, 1941, in Stuttgart, Germany.
He developed an early interest in music and began his career as a pop vocalist. Wächtler went to school in Stuttgart and then went to Paris to study art history after finishing high school.
During his stay in Paris, he lived in Saint-Germain, an artists’ quarter, and immersed himself in the city’s dynamic artistic culture. He began singing songs in both German and French, in addition to painting.
Following his time in Paris, Wächtler set out on a tour throughout the world. He hitchhiked from Africa to Japan, stopping in London and Holland en route. His experiences along the way affected his music and broadened his outlook on life.
He eventually returned to Germany and began singing in discos and gala evenings. As an entertainer, he also had his own programmes that showcased his diverse talents.
Wächtler acquired a record contract with Cornet Records, a German record label headed by renowned producer Heinz Gietz, in September 1967.
In the same month, his debut single, “Monja,” was released. The song was a big success, peaking at number four in the German charts and number one in the Swiss charts for the full month of January 1968.
It was the first number-one hit in Switzerland’s newly organised hit parade. Wächtler was supported by the Jay Five, a Cornet-signed cover band.
Despite the popularity of “Monja,” Wächtler was a one-hit wonder. “Cindy Jane,” his follow-up single, did not fare as well.
Nonetheless, he continued to record singles until 1972, when Cornet Records was purchased by BASF. During this time, one of his most hit songs was “Everyone Comes Again.”
Wächtler married his long-term partner, Doris, with whom he had children, in 1980. He had a cancer procedure in 1994 and momentarily focused on his hobby of painting.
He did, however, make a brief return to the music industry, even appearing on television and redoing “Monja” as a “cult title.” In 2001, he published a new album that includes a song by Drafi Deutscher called “Do You Want a Tequila?”
Wächtler lived in Schürdt, Westerwald, until his death on September 11, 2009. He was laid to rest in the Flammersfeld cemetery.
