An accident involving a Hyundai Universe Commercial Bus has seen to the death of 9 students of The University Of Education, Winneba. The accident occured on Sunday, 13 March, 2022 on the Kumasi – Accra highways.
The fatal accident which saw several injured and the death of students is alleged to have been caused by the driver of the Hyundai Universe Commercial Bus registered AK324-22. According to the populous of eye witnesses the driver who was carrying passengers onboard from Sunyani did not notice the traffic regulations on the road and thus crash into a stationery articulated truck.
The 40 – footer truck carrying timber logs had earlier been engaged in an accident at Asuboi; a suburb of Suhum in the Eastern region. The Eastern Regional Police Command has since the accident started investigations.
The Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh has also revealed that the dead bodies have been resumed to the Suhum Government Hospital pending investigation.
“On-the-spot investigations at the section of the accident spot at Asuboi on the Accra-Kumasi dual carriage road, indicated that the driver of the said commercial bus failed to observe traffic ahead whilst he was allegedly sleeping.
“In the process, he crashed into a 40-footer container loaded with wood which fell partially on the road as a result of a previous accident. The passengers who sustained the injuries have been transported to the Suhum Government Hospital and are receiving treatment whilst the dead have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy,” he told JoyNews in an interview.
