Who Is Renzi?
Matteo Renzi OMRI, born on January 11, 1975, is a prominent Italian politician known for his dynamic leadership and significant contributions to the political landscape of Italy. Serving as the prime minister of Italy from 2014 to 2016, Renzi has left an indelible mark on the nation’s politics.
Renzi’s political career started at the local level. From 2004 until 2009, he was the president of the province of Florence, proving his early commitment to public service. His dedication and success in this capacity catapulted him to the position of mayor of Florence, which he served from 2009 to 2014, gaining praise for his leadership style.
Renzi’s political career took a crucial shift in 2013 when he was appointed Secretary of the Democratic Party (PD). This was a watershed event in his career, as he took over as leader of one of Italy’s major political parties.
The following year, at 39, Renzi was elected Prime Minister of Italy, becoming the G7’s youngest leader and the first mayor to hold that position.
Renzi’s prime ministership was marked by a bold and ambitious agenda to modernise different sectors of Italian governance.

Renzi made news in January 2021 when he withdrew Italia Viva’s backing for the Conte II Cabinet, precipitating the 2021 Italian government crisis. Following that, Italia Viva, led by Renzi, backed Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s national unity administration in February 2021, demonstrating Renzi’s ability to manage the difficult political scene.
