Ragnhild Mowinckel was born on September 12, 1992, in Molde, Møre og Romsdal. At the Junior World Championships in 2012, she made history by taking home gold in both the giant slalom and super combined events. She also had a bronze in super-G in her wonderful collection. After her early success, in January of the same year, she made her World Cup debut, managing the challenging slalom race in Zagreb.
Her career took a further turn in March when she secured her first World Cup point in Schladming, Austria, finishing a very creditable 25th in the giant slalom. They showed even more improvement in December 2012 in St. Moritz, where they finished 19th in the super-G and 16th in the super combined. At the 2012 World Championships, she showed off her versatility by finishing 17th in the super combined, 27th in the downhill, and 21st in the giant slalom.
However, it was the 2018 campaign that marked Mowinckel’s true breakthrough. Her first podium finishes in the giant slalom at Kronplatz and the super-G at Val d’Isère, where she placed second, heralded her arrival as a formidable force in alpine skiing. At the height of her career, she shocked the skiing world by taking home two silver medals from the Winter Olympics in Korea, one each in giant slalom and downhill. In addition to her stellar performance, she placed fourth in the combined and a strong 13th in super-G.
Mowinckel defeated all of her rivals, including the national favorite Viktoria Rebensburg, to win her first World Cup in the giant slalom at Ofterschwang in 2018. Her rapid ascension was severely hampered by two devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries that she suffered in 2019—one in March and the other in a fall. Her injuries prevented her from participating in the 2020 season, which tested her mental and physical fortitude.
Mowinckel’s successful return to the World Cup in the 2021 season demonstrated her unrelenting drive. Despite the challenges, she kept moving closer to the pinnacle of her sport. An important step in her comeback was placing second in the super-G at Val d’Isère in December 2021.
The 2022 Winter Olympics’ opening event, the giant slalom, represented the height of Mowinckel’s determination and fortitude. Her best finish of the season, a solid fifth place, confirmed her status as a formidable alpine ski contender.
