A nursing school is an educational institution that takes individuals who are willing to become nurses through the necessary training they need to equip them in the career path they have chosen.

Every now and then, nurses are passing out of various nursing institutions in Ghana. Today, there are numerous nursing schools all over the country, and you will agree with me that nursing has become one of the most sought after professions in these times.

In view of this, there is an increasing need for appropriate educational institutions that are registered and accredited, lest time and money are wasted.

Do you have the desire to become a nurse with the necessary skills in the next few years?

Then there is the need to enrol in the best nursing schools in Ghana which are registered with the Nurses and Midwifery Council also accredited by the National Accreditation Board.

You can go for a certificate nursing programme which will last for two years, a diploma programme lasting for three years or a degree programme for four years.

In this article, you will get to know the best private nursing schools in Ghana, the programmes they offer, their admission requirements and how to apply to any of them.

Narh-Bita College

The Narh-Bita College, which is connected to Narh-Bita Clinic was founded in 2008. The clinic was founded in 1979. As the clinic evolved, its standard was raised to that of a hospital and named the Narh-Bita Hospital Limited.  The institution was birthed out of a shortage of health workers. It is located in Tema.

For auxiliary programmes, the entry requirements are :

1.To have an aggregate 48 or better in six WASSCE subjects (3 core and 3 elective) or aggregate 36 or better in six  SSCE subjects (3 core and 3 electives).

  1. A1-E8 in Mathematics, Science and English and three other elective subjects.
  2. Must be between 18 to 35 years.

 

The Diploma Programmes they offer are :

Registered General Nursing.

Registered Mental Nursing.

Registered Midwifery (For females only).

Registered Community Health Nursing.

 

The entry requirements are as follows:

1.Aggregate 36 or better in three core and three elective subjects for WASSCE and Aggregate 24 or better in three core and three elective subjects in SSCE.

2.Credits(A1-C6) in three core and three elective subjects for WASSCE and Credits(A-D) in three core and three elective subjects.

Candidates with Diploma certificate in Nursing from recognized institutions with a minimum GPA of 2.50 and a pass in the licensure examination conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council will be admitted to third year. There will be no entrance exam for them.

Holders of Diploma in Nursing Education or Administration with a minimum of B+ average. enter the programme at third year.

State Registered Nurses enter the programme in second year.

Health Assistants, Community, or Enrolled Nurse and non-nurse mature candidates enter the programme at first year.

 

Application forms for admissions are purchased at the GENERAL OFFICE, Narh-Bita College Main Campus (near Narh-Bita Hospital, Tema) or Adom Campus at Community five (5) opposite St. Pauls Methodist Church, for a non-refundable fee.

Another option is to download the application forms from the college’s website at www.narhbita.com.gh and pay the processing fee on submission. Completed application forms with certified copies of relevant supporting documents should be sent to:

Western Hills Nurses Training College

This training Institution located at Ofankor. It is one of the best private nursing training colleges Ghana Admissions are normally opened between February to April Every year. The process for admission are as follows;

Admission forms must be bought at the school and forms filled and submitted. These forms will be looked at and if they happen to meet the requirements, an interview will follow.

If you pass the interview, you will be admitted into the institution. The school offers only general nursing.

The school requires:

A cut off aggregate of 48 or better in six subjects, comprising 3 core and 3 electives for WASSCE and aggregate 30 or better in six subjects, comprising 3 core and 3 electives.

Also, you must be between 18 to 35 years to be able to apply

 

Central University School of Nursing

Central University is the largest private Christian University in the country. It has two campuses located at Miotso and Mataheko. They believe in raising transformational leaders who will make a difference in society through the values imparted in the students. Their motto is  Faith, Integrity and Excellence.

The institution offers Bachelor of Science in Nursing which lasts for four years. Central University will require the following before you are admitted into the School of Nursing :

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE): with an aggregate score of twenty-four (24) or better in six (6) subjects comprising: A – D in all three (3) core subjects that is: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science and at least passes that is (A – D)  in three (3) elective subjects in the options of Science, General Arts, Agricultural Science and Home Economics.

West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE): with an aggregate score of 36 or better in six (6) subjects: A1 – C6 in all three (3) core subjects that is: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science and at least passes in three (3)  elective subjects in the options of Science, General Arts, Agricultural Science and Home  Economics.

Foreign Students Requirements: Foreign students must have their result slips translated into English. In addition, applicants must be able to speak and write in English.

Other Entry Qualifications for Admissions: Candidates with the Diploma in Registered Nursing (RN) from recognized institutions can apply. Those candidates can transfer credits from their previous course of studies, with appropriate recommendations and references. Applicants with State Registered Nurses’ (SRN) qualification from recognized health institutions and with at least 3 years of practice.

Applicants can also apply online by clicking http://online.central.edu.gh to buy an E-voucher for GH100.00 (for Ghanaian applicants) or the cedi equivalent of US 100.00 (for foreign applicants) at any Ecobank branch. Use the PIN and SERIAL NUMBER on the E-voucher to apply online at apply.central.edu.gh. VISA branded cards and MTN Mobile Money can also be used to purchase E-vouchers online.

Interviews will be organized for all those who want to enrol.

Applicants must upload two of their passport-sized photographs, certificates or results slips.

All Online applicants must produce original copies of their supporting documents to the Admissions office before they are permitted to register for the semester.

A form you submit cannot be edited.

 

Alternatively, paper application forms can be purchased for GHC100.00 for undergraduates for Ghanaian applicants) and the cedi equivalent of USD 100.00 for Undergraduate (for foreign through the following means:

Banker’s Draft from the Finance Office at the Mataheko or from the permanent campus at Miotso, off the Accra-Aflao Road.

Ecobank, Zenith Bank and GCB Bank branches nationwide and from the 170 Ghana post office branches across the country.

Applicants would have to pay GHC 100 for Ghanaian (undergraduate) for Ghanaian applicants or cedi equivalent of USD100 for foreign applicants, paid at the time of submission.

An applicant must submit the following at the time of application to the University:

A completed Application Form

An official Results Slip or Certificate

Transcripts from previous Universities (where applicable). Such transcripts should be sent directly to the Admissions Officer. It is the responsibility of the applicant to arrange for transcript(s) and /or transfer form to be mailed and to ensure that they arrive promptly. Hand-delivered transcript(s) are not acceptable.
