Philipp Kutter’s Biography

Philipp Mario Kutter, born on August 31, 1975, in Altstätten, Switzerland, is a prominent Swiss politician affiliated with the Die Mitte party, formerly known as CVP.

Kutter, who is currently the mayor of Wädenswil and a national councillor, has made important contributions to his city and the Swiss political environment.

Kutter completed his basic school in Wädenswil before enrolling in the Wiedikon Cantonal School in Zurich for his Matura Type B. At the University of Zurich, he studied history, media studies, and political science. Kutter began his career in media after finishing his studies, first as a journalist for the Zürichsee-Zeitung and then as the editor-in-chief of the Thalwiler Anzeiger.

Kutter’s political career began in 2006, when he was elected to the Wädenswil municipal council, where he was in charge of safety and health. Kutter reached a significant career milestone in 2010 when he was elected mayor of Wädenswil. His responsibilities included location promotion and urban development, cultural promotion, population services, human resources, and information technology.

During his mayorship, Kutter was also an active member of the Zurich Cantonal Council. From May 2007 to July 2018, he was a member of the CVP parliamentary group, serving as President from 2008 until his departure in July 2018.

Kutter’s dedication and commitment were on display in his consecutive electoral victories in the 2014 general municipal renewal elections and the 2015 cantonal council elections.

When he ran in the 2015 Swiss parliamentary elections, Kutter’s political ambitions extended beyond the local level. Despite finishing third in his party with an excellent number of votes, he nearly missed the election. Kutter was sworn in as a National Councillor on June 11, 2018, following the departure of Barbara Schmid-Federer. He was later elected in the 2023 parliamentary elections.

Kutter actively contributes to the Swiss government as a National Councillor by serving on the Commission for Science, Education, and Culture, as well as the Commission for Transport and Telecommunications, where he serves as Vice President.

His dedication to public service and to Switzerland was recognised by his party, which nominated him for the Council of States elections in the autumn of 2023.

Despite personal hardships, Kutter continues to be an inspiration. In February 2023, he was in a skiing accident that paralysed his legs and right arm due to two shattered cervical vertebrae. Kutter, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Swiss Paraplegic Centre, has temporarily delegated his tasks to his deputies.

His determination, on the other hand, remains steadfast, as he has partially resumed his duties as mayor of Wädenswil as of August 2023.

Kutter has a fulfilling personal life outside of his political profession. He is married and the proud father of two children. Kutter and his wife also manage a communications and marketing agency, demonstrating his entrepreneurial energy and dedication to multiple endeavours.
