Who Is Peter Ramsauer?

Peter Ramsauer is a German politician of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) who served as the Federal Minister of Transport, Building, and Urban Development in the Second Merkel cabinet.

Ramsauer was born in Munich, Germany on February 10, 1954. In 1973, he finished his Abitur at the Staatliches Landschulheim Marquartstein gymnasium. Ramsauer got the opportunity to study abroad at Eton College in England for a year during his time at Marquartstein.

Ramsauer went on to study business economics at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich after finishing his Abitur. He earned his diploma in 1979 and his doctorate in 1985.

Aside from his academic efforts, Ramsauer was also certified as a professional miller, mirroring his ancestors’ traditional occupation. He speaks English and French fluently and is an accomplished pianist.

Ramsauer married Susanne, a home economics teacher, and the couple had four daughters. Ramsauer’s wife is, interestingly, a cousin of American actress Sandra Bullock.

Ramsauer’s political career began when he joined the conservative Young Union (JU) youth movement in the early 1970s. He joined the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) in 1973. He quickly progressed through the ranks, finally becoming Bavarian vice-chairman of the JU in 1983 and CSU vice-chairman in 2008.

Ramsauer’s political career continued when he was elected to the Traunreut municipal diet in 1978 and later to the Traunstein district assembly in 1984. He was elected to the Bundestag parliament in 1990 after running successfully in federal elections.

Ramsauer was the CSU Chief Whip of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group from 1998 to 2005 in his early years as a member of parliament. He was also a member of the parliament’s Council of Elders during this time, which had key responsibilities such as deciding the daily legislative agenda.

He was elected chairman of the Bundestag group of CSU parliamentarians in 2005, co-chairing the CDU/CSU parliamentary group with Volker Kauder.

Chancellor Angela Merkel recognised Ramsauer’s capabilities and leadership abilities, and he was appointed Federal Minister of Transport, Building, and Urban Development in 2009.

He kept this job till Merkel’s second term ended in 2013. Ramsauer led several committees after leaving office, including the Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy from 2013 to 2017 and the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development from 2017 to 2021.

Ramsauer has been noted for his strong economic policy opinions throughout his political career. Notably, he opposed proposals for Deutsche Bahn’s initial public offering in 2010, claiming that the company needed to work on improving its quality and dependability before going public.

Ramsauer has also contributed to the development of Germany’s relations with Russia. In 2007, he accompanied Bavarian Minister President Edmund Stoiber to a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, and in 2010, he joined Chancellor Merkel on an official visit to Moscow. Ramsauer has called for less reliance on Russian gas supplies and the exploration of other energy sources.

Ramsauer has held conservative opinions on social issues in the past. In 2017, he voted against Germany’s legalisation of same-sex marriage.

In addition, he was embroiled in a scandal in 2016 when he was accused of launching a racial assault on a Greek photojournalist during a meeting between German and Greek authorities.
