Peter Brian Gabriel is an English singer-songwriter and musician whose impact on the music business is extensive and unrestricted. He was born in London on February 13, 1950. Over his career, Gabriel has been known for his inventiveness, his advocacy, and his commitment to expanding the boundaries of musical expression. Being the original lead vocalist for the progressive rock group Genesis, he initially became well-known.

Early Life

As a key member of the band Genesis, which was Gabriel’s first musical collaboration, he helped shape the progressive rock sound that the group produced. His distinctive voice and dramatic stage presence contributed to the band’s success. When Genesis became a prominent force in the progressive rock industry, Gabriel was acknowledged as a leader with a unique and creative approach to music.

Career

After leaving Genesis in 1975, Gabriel embarked on a solo career that would further solidify his reputation as a musical genius. “Solsbury Hill,” his first solo hit, marked the beginning of a prosperous solo career; the release of “So,” his fifth studio album, marked a sea change; “So” is his best-selling record, having sold three platinum records in the UK and five platinum records in the US; the album’s lead single, “Sledgehammer,” brought Gabriel not only financial success but also nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards; in fact, “MTV’s most-played music video ever” (a 2011 assessment).

In addition to his musical endeavors, Gabriel has been a devoted advocate for world music. In 1982, he participated in the creation of the World of Music, Arts, and Dance (WOMAD) festival, which provided a platform for a range of global musical expressions. Through his Real Global Records label, Gabriel has continued to create and promote global music, raising awareness of a variety of ethnic sounds throughout the globe.

Peter Gabriel’s impact on the music industry extends beyond his creative output. He played a major role in the development of digital music distribution strategies by co-founding OD2, one of the earliest online music download services. Gabriel’s creative approaches contributed to the transformation of the music business and the dawn of the digital era.

He has actively participated in several human rights initiatives, and his anti-apartheid album “Biko” was released in 1980. From his participation in benefit concerts like Amnesty International’s Human Rights Now! tour to his co-founding of the Witness human rights organization in 1992, Gabriel has continued to advocate for human rights. He and Richard Branson co-founded The Elders, an organization that Nelson Mandela established in 2007 to address global concerns.

The Polar Music Prize, thirteen MTV Video Music Awards, six Grammy Awards, and three Brit Awards are only a few of his numerous honors. His induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 as a member of Genesis and in 2014 as a solo artist is proof of his ongoing influence in the music business.
