Playing Hannele in the world premiere of Gerhart Hauptmann’s Hanneles Himmelfahrt in 1983 was one of her most prominent performances. Many people recognised Conrad’s skill and genius in this part; theatre critic Alfred Kerr called her the greatest actress of her generation.
Paul Schlenther, a theatre critic for the Vossische Zeitung who subsequently rose to the position of director of the Vienna Burgtheater, married Paula Conrad in 1892.
