Paul von Hindenburg was born on October 2, 1847, and he was a German field marshal and politician. Paul von Hindenburg was a member of the Protestant East Prussian noble family von Beneckendorff and von Hindenburg on his father’s side.
His parents were Prussian officer and landowner Robert von Beneckendorff and von Hindenburg. Paul von Hindenburg had a brother called Bernhard von Hindenburg who was 11 years younger.
He led the Supreme Army Command during the First World War. In 1925, he was elected second president of the Weimar Republic. However, with the appointment of the first Brüning cabinet in 1930, Paul von Hindenburg switched to an authoritarian presidential regime.
That notwithstanding, he won in the 1932 Presidential election and was in power till he died.
On several occasions, he rejected and failed to accept the National Socialist Adolf Hitler as head of government but he appointed him Chancellor on January 30, 1933.
Paul von Hindenburg got engaged to Irmengard von Rappard, a native of Sögeln ( Bramsche ), but she died of tuberculosis.
She died at age 17 before the wedding. Later on September 24, 1879, Paul von Hindenburg got married to Gertrud von Sperling and they had Irmengard Pauline Louise Gertrud (1880–1948), Oskar (1883–1960) and Annemarie Barbara Ilse Ursula Margarete Eleonore (1891–1978) as their children.
Orders
When Paul von Hindenburg was alive, he received the following medals: Black Eagle Order, Grand Cross of the Iron Cross with the Golden Star, Pour le Mérite with oak leaves, Grand Cross of the Military Order of Maria Theresa as well as Order of Saint Tamara.
Paul von Hindenburg was an honorary commander of the Order of St. John and dean of the Brandenburg Cathedral Monastery.
Paul von Hindenburg Cause of Death
Paul von Hindenburg died on the morning of August 2, 1934 due to ill-health . He died at Gut Neudeck . At the time of his death, he was 86 years old.
Even though he was supposed to be buried at Gut Neudeck, a burial was organized for him in the Battle of Tannenberg memorial by Hitler. The real cause of his death is yet to be updated.
