Okka Gundel is a respected German journalist, author and television presenter born on December 28, 1974 in Ostfriesland. She developed interest in journalism at a very young age an today is one of the respected female journalists in the country.

Her father was a sea captain whereas her mother was a teacher and raised her together with her older brother in Ostfriesland.

She attended the Georg-August University in Göttingen where she studied journalism, sociology and sports science and graduated with a Master of Arts (MA). While in school, she worked at the NDR and Göttinger Tageblatt to gain experience and to build her CV.

She later moved to WDR in Cologne in 2002 initially for her traineeship. However, she continued to work there even after her traineeship and got to present a number if sports programs on WDR TV. She has also been a regular face on ARD since 2008 where she made a name for herself for her time on ARD morning magazine, daily topics and the sports show.

She has also moderated the Frankfurt Book Fair and lit. COLOGNE a number of times as well as other sports, culture and society events.

Away from her time on TV, Gundel is a prolific writer with enormous experience. She has published a number of articles for the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung” as well as “Der Spiegel”.

She published her first book in 2011 titled “Eleven friends you must be: why women’s soccer is so exciting”. That same year, Gundel became a habitual writer at the Nordwest-Zeitung (NWZ) in Oldenburg. She then became their exclusive writer, commentator and correspondent at the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament in France.

Away from her journalism work, Gundel is also very much involved in helping others. She has been an ambassador of the Alzheimer Research Initiative since 2012 and eventually awarded the Health Media Award in 2022 for her contributions and voluntary work to the initiative over the years.

She became an ambassador for PINK in 2022 after she survived breast cancer in 2020.
