Nureyev was born on March 17, 1938, and he was considered the greatest mallet ballet dancer of his generation. He was born on a Trans-Siberian train near Irkutsk, Siberia, Soviet Union. His career started off with Kirov Ballet in the Soviet era in Leningrad.
In 1961, Nureyev changed his allegiance from the Soviet Union to the West even though there were attempts to stop him. He danced with the Royal Ballet in London. He also served as director of the Paris Opera Ballet from 1983 to 1989.
It is refreshing to note that Nureyev served as a choreographer and he was the chief choreographer of the Paris Opera Ballet. Nureyev had a bad temper and did not have the heart for rules, limitations and hierarchical order.
He was closely associated with the likes of Ringo Starr, Gore Vidal, Freddie Mercury, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Mick Jagger, Liza Minnelli, Andy Warhol, Lee Radziwill, Talitha Pol, Jessye Norman and Tamara Toumanova.
Even though he frequently visited the New York discotheque Studio 54 in the late 1970s, he developed an intolerance for celebrities. He danced with the likes of Antoinette Sibley, Cynthia Gregory, Gelsey Kirkland and Annette Page.
Nureyev was described as bisexual as he had heterosexual relationships as a younger man. His life was characterized by numerous bathhouse visits and anonymous pick-ups.
Family
Nureyev‘s grandfather was Nurakhmet Fazlievich Fazliev, and his father was Khamit Fazleevich Nureyev. They were from Asanovo in the Sharipov volost of the Ufa District of the Ufa Governorate (now the Ufa District of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
The mother of Nureyev was Farida Agliullovna Nureyeva (Agliullova) (1907–1987). She was born in the village of Tatarskoye Tyugulbaevo, Kuznechikhinsky volost, Kazan Governorate (now Alkeyevsky District of the Republic of Tatarstan).
Nureyev had three sisters who were all raised in a Tatar Muslim family.
Nureyev Cause of Death
Nureyev fell sick and was taken to the hospital Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours in Levallois-Perret on November 20, 1992.
He stayed in the hospital till he died on January 6, 1993. His death was attributed to complications from AIDS. He was 54 years old at the time of his death.
The funeral service of Nureyev was held in the marble foyer of the Paris Garnier Opera House. His grave was at the Russian cemetery in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois near Paris.
The grave features a tomb draped in a mosaic of an Oriental carpet, a Kelim especially as he was an avid collector of beautiful carpets and antique textiles.
