Gaetano “Nino” D’Angelo was born in the San Pietro a Patierno district of Naples, Italy, on June 21, 1957. He came from modest beginnings to become a well-known and varied personality in the entertainment world. Coming from a low-income background, D’Angelo had to drop out of school due to financial difficulties, which forced him to work as a singer for weddings and an ice cream vendor.
Career
D’Angelo made his musical breakthrough with his debut album, “A Storia mia” (meaning “My Story”), which was well received, especially in Sicily. A significant turning point in his life occurred in 1979 when he wed Annamaria, with whom he is happy to have two boys.
D’Angelo began performing and was successful in sceneggiate musical plays, which are a kind of theater that originated in Naples. “Celebrità,” the first of five films directed or produced by Ninì Grassia, marked the beginning of D’Angelo’s cinematic career. It was designed as a star vehicle based on D’Angelo’s vocal talent.
The release of the record “Un jeans e una maglietta” (“Jeans and a T-shirt”) and the corresponding film in 1982 marked a crucial turning point for D’Angelo. Matching the album’s incredible success selling over a million copies was the movie’s box office victory, outperforming even the Hollywood blockbuster “Flashdance.”
Even though he wasn’t officially recognized in the Hit Parade, D’Angelo made waves with his album “Cantautore,” a commercial success, while performing the song “Vai” (“Go”) at the 1986 Sanremo Music Festival. After making his debut on December 15, 1987, at the renowned Olympia in Paris, he went on to perform all over the world, including in Australia, Germany, Switzerland, the United States, and France.
D’Angelo wrote his debut musical, “Core pazzo” (“Mad Heart”), in 1997 to demonstrate his flexibility. His artistic abilities also translated to the cinema, as he was recognized for the soundtrack of “To Die for Tano” in the same year he received the David Di Donatello Award for Best Music.
Taking on the roles of performer, director, writer, and composer for “Aitanic,” a 2000 spoof of the popular film “Titanic,” with fellow Italian actresses Sabina Began and Giacomo Rizzo, D’Angelo achieved success.
Songs like “Senza giacca e cravatta” (“Without Suit and Tie”), “Mari’,” and “‘A Storia ‘E Nisciuno” (“Nobody’s Story”), performed by D’Angelo at the Sanremo Festival in 2001, 2002, and 2003, demonstrated his continued influence in the music industry.
