The National Democratic Party (NDC) and currently the opposition party has written to The Commonwealth Secretariat requesting a probe into Akuffo-Addo’s bad governance and infringement of fundamental human rights.
The party’s General Secretary; Mr. Johnson Aseidu Nketiah during a press conference on Monday, 28th February, 2022 revealed that the party has no other option than to draw the attention of the international body. According to him, all efforts to bring Akuffo-Addo and his government to order hasn’t succeeded.
There’s been recent arrest of certain media personalities and activists like Boamah Bennie and Oliver Baker whose charges ranged from false accusations and threatening of coup. The NDC believes, these are instances of judiciary abuse, political hate and human rights abuse and therefore the Commonwealth Secretariat should be brought to notice.
He revealed that, these acts are contrary to the rules of The Commonwealth Secretariat and stands highly prohibited by the body.
“Since assuming the reins of power in 2016, the message of physical violence against political opponents that Nana Addo preached and championed before the 2016 general elections has turned into structural, institutional and systematic forms of violence in the form of human rights violations, harassment, and political persecutions against members and supporters of the NDC,” Johnson Aseidu Nketiah stated.
