Monika Iwersen enrolled at the Universities in Mainz and Geneva after completing high school. She was at the universities from 1982 to 1988. It must also be noted that she was also at the Institute of International Studies in Monterey/USA for some studies.
She commenced her training for higher foreign service in 1989 and completed after two years. She served as a consultant in the Department for Poland and the Baltics at the Foreign Office in Berlin between 1991 and 1992. She also worked as a press and protocol officer at the Consulate General in Instanbul until 1995.
Over the years, Monika Iwersen has also served in some key positions. She has held positions in the United Nations Security Council Department at the Foreign Office in Berlin. Monika Iwersen served as a Permanent Representative at the embassy in La Paz between 1998 and 2001.
She made a return to the Foreign Office in Berlin in 2004 and subsequently became the deputy head of the department for relations with Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria. Between 2008 and 2011, she also became the permanent representative at the Algiers embassy.
