The Deputy Majority Leader of Parliament; Afenyo Markin claims comments made by the some members of the minority caucus in regards to the apex court’s ruling recently is misleading and puts the court’s name to disrepute.
Ghana’s apex court, the Supreme Court had earlier on Wednesday passed a judgement that allows deputy speakers of parliament to vote while presiding as speaker. The judgement has since passage welcome criticism from key NDC members like former president John Dramani Mahama and Ningo-Prampram MP. According to them, the ruling is a form of the judiciary interference in parliamentary businesses and also an indication of the judiciary’s support for the e-levy bill.
However, Hon.Afenyo Markin disagrees with the minority caucus. According to him, the minority should accept the judgement in good faith rather than spewing lies and tarnishing the integrity of the judiciary. He said, “what we need to do is to work together but this threat of we will do this, we will do that will not help anybody… The people of Ghana rightly voted for deeper consultation in order for us to build consensus for us to be guided by the collective good of the Ghanaian people. Their quality of life and not the pettiness of NDC, NPP partisanship.”
“I deem it an illegality that the person presiding in the House will take part in the vote he is superintending over. He [Haruna Iddrisu] knows that political statement he made was incorrect, unacceptable, was scandalous and I beg to submit that if we don’t support the institutions of state as politicians, we will end up compromising our journey towards good governance and we would give room for some adventurous person to think that we are not serious in our politics,” he said on Top Story on Thursday.
