Minority Suggests 3 Proposals That Can Salvage Ghana’s Wrecking Economy. May 2022

The minority caucus are still showing discontent at current measures taking by the ruling government to mitigate the current economic crisis. According to the leaders of the minority caucus, government can still follow more measures.

This was followed after the ruling government met senior members of government at the Peduase Lodge to review certain flagship programmes and other measures in other to save the economy.

After the quarterly government retreat at Peduase, the Finance minister has revealed that V8 imports and foreign travels by government appointees have been hibernated and also salaries of same appointees are expected to be cut by 30%.

However, the Minority Leader; Haruna Iddrisu while speaking to the press has disclosed the opposition’s discontent at these measures. He claims they are not enough.

Leader of the side, Haruna Iddrissu at a press conference said, “Our immediate response to the honourable Minister of Finance is to state emphatically and unequivocally that he’s lost touch with reality; he’s not in tune with the state of the Ghanaian economy.”

“Our economy today is one that reflects nothing less than a cost of living crisis and a cost of doing business crisis. Both for citizens and for businesses who are unable to cope with the measures so announced by the Honorable Minister for Finance. We do not find his proposed measures adequate enough,” he said.

Dr. Ato Forson, a ranking member on the finance committee from the minority side has suggested three solutions the ruling government can adopt in a recent tweet he made.

“The fiscal measures announced today are just cosmetic and Empty. It will further erode confidence in the economy.

“Government should: 1. place a moratorium on new loans 2. cut 2022 foreign-financed projects by at least 50 percent and 3. And deliver on the promise to review all flagship programs,” Dr. Ato Forson said in a tweet.
