Smith defeated Mensur Suljovi 3-1 in the first round of the 2015 World Championship before coming back to defeat Brendan Dolan 4-2 after falling behind 2-0. This victory set up a third-round matchup with Stephen Bunting of St. Helens. Smith fell behind 2-0 despite knocking out checkouts of 170 and 132 before finding his scoring touch and limiting Bunting to one leg to cut the deficit to 3-2.
