Ackers and her artist partner, Irma Johanna Schäfer, relocated to Hannover in 1927. Eventually, in 1935, the couple made Glonn their home. During this time, Ackers kept up her literary profession.
“Girlfriends: a Novel (about Women)” (Freundinnen: Ein Roman (unter Frauen), one of her most important works, was published in Berlin in 1927 and 1928, as well as in Hannover in 1923 and 1925.
“Girlfriends” tackles questions of gender and sexuality while delving into lesbian desire amid Weimar Berlin’s artistic and theatrical community.
Thousands of copies of the book were disseminated, and it sold well in multiple versions. However the book was outlawed in 1934 as a result of the establishment of the National Socialist administration, and it was formally designated as a prohibited work in 1936.
