Who Was Max Liebermann?
Max Liebermann was a renowned German painter and printmaker born on July 20, 1847 in Berlin, Kingdom of Prussia and died on February 8, 1935. He was also well known as a top advocate of Impressionism in Germany and continental Europe as well.
Liebermann was privileged to be born into a wealthy family. His father, Louis Liebermann was a successful Jewish fabric manufacturer who later became a banker.
He was one of six children born to his parents. His siblings inluded an older brother, Georg Liebermann and historian Felix Liebermann who died in 1925, ten years before he died.
Liebermann never liked school while growing up and used drawing as a way to pass time. With time, his parents also noticed his talent and gave him all the supported he needed although they also encouraged him to take his education seriously.
It was so serious that, his father in particular stopped him from signing their last name “Liebermann” on his initial paintings because at the time they didn’t give too much importance to painting.
He was only 13 years old at the time but that never discouraged or stopped him from doing what he loved.. He continued to follow his passion even when his parents opposed the idea of him becoming a painter initially.
They later agreed and allowed him to attend the Grand Ducal Saxon Art in Welmar in 1869 to study drawing and painting. While in art school, Liebermann was trained by renowned Belgian history painter Ferdinand Pauwels.
After his studies in art school, he travelled to paint in different countries and cities such as the Netherlands, Amsterdam where he did his first large painting known as “Die Gänserupferinnen”. He later moved to Paris in 1873 where he established his own studio in Montmartre.
He later travelled to Italy to work for some time and returned to his home country, Germany, specifically Munich in the later 1870s and stayed there until 1884 where he returned to Berlin.
He lived in Berlin since he returned in 1884 till he died in 1935.
By the time he stopped painting and eventually died, Liebermann had done more than 200 commissioned portraits which included that of notable personalities like Albert Einstein and Paul von Hindenburg.
Max Liebermann Cause of Death
Max Liebermann died on February 8, 1935 at his residence on Pariser Platz, Munich, Germany. According to reports, he died a natural death in his sleep.
For some reasons, his burial was rather a quiet one despite being one of the greatest painters in Germany. No media house covered his death and neither the Academy of Arts, which he was once a president of also bother to pay their last respect to him.
For a man of his stature and record, it’s rather unfortunate that the number of people who attended his funeral was barely up to a hundred.
He was survived by his daughter who fled the country three years later to the United States. She is called Katharina Riezler.
