Max Danz was a multidimensional individual who made contributions to leadership, athletics, and medicine. His lasting influence as a physician, sports official, and supporter of athletics is still felt in German sports culture and beyond.
Biography
Max Danz was born on September 6, 1908, in Kassel, Germany. Max Danz first got interested in athletics in the 1920s when he joined the gymnastics movement. His ability as an athlete quickly became apparent as he performed exceptionally well in running competitions, especially the 400 and 800 meters. Among his notable accomplishments is his participation in the 1930 University Festival, when he finished third in the 800-meter race and his triumph in the 1931 German Championships’ 3 x 1000-meter event.
Tragically, in 1932, he had a torn Achilles tendon in 1934, ending his active sporting career despite his promising athletic career.
Max Danz studied medicine at institutions in Berlin and Marburg after pursuing his sporting career. After graduating from medical school in 1937, he opened an internist practice in Berlin. Nevertheless, the start of World War II interrupted his career as he was enlisted in the Wehrmacht and stationed in Hesse’s hospitals.
Danz’s wartime experiences, particularly his brief stint as a prisoner of war, molded his outlook and gave him a strong sense of responsibility and fortitude.
Max Danz became a well-known figure in German sports administration following World War II. As the leader of KSV Hessen Kassel’s football and athletics departments, he was first demonized but ultimately played a crucial part in bringing athletics back to life in Kassel.
His impact went beyond the neighborhood as he was instrumental in the founding of the Hessian Athletics Association and subsequently co-founded, acting as the organization’s first head, the German Athletics Association in 1949. Danz’s spearheading of the movement to readmit Germany to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) following the war was crucial.
