Biography

Mathilde Danegger was born on August 2, 1903, in Vienna and passed away on July 27, 1988, in East Berlin.  Danegger was raised in an artistic household; her father, famous Austrian character actor and director Josef Danegger, subsequently achieved fame at the Zurich City Theater. Driven by her father’s love of the theater, Danegger started her creative journey to make a name for herself in the theater industry.

Her training started early, with her older brothers, the renowned actors Josef and Theodor Danegger, serving as her mentors. She had a great debut at Berlin’s esteemed Deutsches Theater in 1912, a connection she would keep for the rest of her life. But her career path took her to many European stages, such as the Burgtheater in Vienna and performances in Brno, until she fled to Switzerland during the 1933 upheaval.

Danegger’s artistic gifts were discovered in Switzerland, where she joined the Free Germany Movement at its inception and used her platform to promote social and political reform during a turbulent time in European history. Her time working under renowned director Wolfgang Langhoff at the Zurich Schauspielhaus and her ventures into cabaret enhanced her standing as a model artist who was devoted to her work and her beliefs.

After the war, Danegger triumphantly returned to Germany in 1947, where she first found chance and comfort at Wiesbaden’s Hessisches Landestheater. But she found a new home and a stage for her gifts in East Berlin, where she lived with her family. She performed on stage with Bertolt Brecht’s renowned Berliner Ensemble from 1951 until 1953.

Danegger became one of the most iconic actors of the German theater throughout the next twenty years, enthralling audiences with her wide repertory and subtle interpretations of complicated characters. As her career developed, she moved into film and television with ease, working with DEFA and GDR television on important projects that cemented her reputation even further.

Among her notable roles, Danegger garnered acclaim for her portrayal of Mrs. Holle in Gottfried Kolditz’s enchanting fairy tale adaptation and her compelling performance in the television film “Mother Jantschova” in 1968.
