At twelve years old, Brundle started his racing career, first competing in grass track events before switching to Hot Rod competitions. He began Formula Ford single-seater racing in 1979 and became well-known very soon.

In 1980, he emerged victorious in the BMW Championship, and in 1981, he shared the British Saloon Car Championship victory with Stirling Moss.

Brundle competed in the British Formula Three Championship in 1983, coming in second behind Ayrton Senna. Both drivers advanced to Formula One the next year.

When Brundle joined the Tyrrell Racing Organization in 1984, he immediately made an impression. However, his season was cut short after a severe collision in which he shattered both of his ankles and feet.

For the next two seasons, Brundle remained a racer for Tyrrell, although the team had trouble competing with the more formidable work teams.

He joined the Zakspeed team in 1987, but he finished the season with just two points. Brundle left Formula One for a year in 1988 and went on to win the World Sportscar Championship, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

With the Brabham team, Brundle made his Formula One comeback in 1989. He enjoyed a great season with steady point finishes. After that, he competed for Benetton in 1992, when he finished second at Monza to record his first podium.

Prior to leaving Formula One in 1996, Brundle worked for Ligier and McLaren.

Following his retirement, Brundle started working as a pundit for the BBC, ITV Sport, and eventually Sky Sports. He has won numerous accolades for his perceptive and amusing commentary, including the RTS Television Sports Award for Best Sports Pundit in 1998, 1999, 2005, and 2006.
