Martha Argerich’s Children. How Many Does She Have? Full Details

Martha Argerich was born on June 5, 1941, and she can be described as an Argentine classical concert pianist. She is seen as one of the greatest pianists of all time and she was born and raised in Buenos Aires to Jewish-Spanish parents. Martha Argerich at age 8 had her debut concert and then after, she had further training in the playing of the piano in Europe.

With respect to education, she kindergarten at the age of two years and eight months and she is known to have started playing the piano at age three. Martha Argerich  was under the tutelage of Vincenzo Scaramuzza at age 5.

Martha Argerich’s family moved to Europe in 1955, and she had the opportunity to study with  Friedrich Gulda in Austria before she also studied with the likes of Stefan Askenase and Maria Curcio. The debut concert of Martha Argerich was when she played Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major.

In 1965, she made her debut in the United States in Lincoln Center’s Great Performers Series. Over the years, Martha Argerich has promoted younger pianists through her annual festival and through her appearances as a member of the jury at international competitions.

She is the president of the International Piano Academy Lake Como and performs annually at the Lugano Festival. Martha Argerich also serves as General Director of the Argerich Music Festival and Encounter in Beppu, Japan, since 1996.

Some of the awards to the credit of Martha Argerich include Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition: 1st prize (1957), Geneva International Music Competition: 1st prize (1957), VII International Chopin Piano Competition: 1st prize (1965), Claudio Arrau Memorial Medal (1997), Diamond Konex Award (1999) as the most important classical musician of the decade in Argentina, Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance (with orchestra), Charles Dutoit (conductor), Martha Argerich, and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for Prokofiev: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 3 / Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 3 (2000), Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance, as well as The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette (2005) Japan.

Others are Praemium Imperiale (2005) Japan, Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance (with orchestra), Voted into Gramophone’s Hall of Fame (2012), Recipient of The Kennedy Center Honors (2016), Recipient of Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (2018), and Recipient of the National Order of the Legion of Honour (2023).

Martha Argerich is known to have three children. They are violinist Lyda Chen-Argerich, Annie Dutoit and  Stéphanie.She had all these children with different men. Composer-conductor Robert Chen is the father of violinist Lyda Chen-Argerich and Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit is the father of Annie Dutoit. Stephanie’s father is American pianist Stephen Kovacevich.
