Borriello started his professional journey in Milan, where he worked his way up the ranks. Before making an appearance for the Milan first squad, he was loaned out to Treviso. Despite difficulties in his early career, Borriello was recalled to Milan’s first squad in 2006 after key players left.

Borriello was sold to Genoa in a joint venture with Milan in 2007. He enjoyed a good season in Genoa, finishing as the league’s third-highest goalscorer. In 2008, he returned to Milan as a replacement for Alberto Gilardino.

Borriello struggled with injuries in his first season back at Milan, but he showed potential the following season, scoring 14 league goals in 26 games.
