Marco Borriello is an Italian former professional footballer who was born on June 18, 1982. He played as a striker throughout his career and represented several Italian clubs, as well as English and Spanish sides. Borriello started his professional journey in Milan, where he worked his way up the ranks. Before making an appearance for the Milan first squad, he was loaned out to Treviso. He had loan spells with Empoli, Reggina, Sampdoria, and Treviso, where he set a career high with five Serie A goals. Despite difficulties in his early career, Borriello was recalled to Milan’s first squad in 2006 after key players left.
Borriello was sold to Genoa in a joint venture with Milan in 2007. He enjoyed a good season in Genoa, finishing as the league’s third-highest goalscorer. In 2008, he returned to Milan as a replacement for Alberto Gilardino.
Borriello struggled with injuries in his first season back at Milan, but he showed potential the following season, scoring 14 league goals in 26 games.
Borriello was loaned to Roma in 2010, where he had a great first season, finishing as the club’s second-leading scorer. His second season at Roma, however, was challenging owing to a coaching change.
Borriello then joined Juventus on a half-season loan from Roma in January 2012. For Juventus, he scored vital goals, including one that secured the club’s first Serie A title in years.
Despite his achievements, Juventus did not sign Borriello, and he briefly returned to Roma before joining Genoa for the third time.
Borriello got back to Genoa for another season after a brief stint at West Ham United before joining Cagliari. He later played for SPAL before moving on to Ibiza, where he retired from professional football in 2019.
Borriello represented Italy on the international stage, and he was a member of the squad for the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament. He was also called up for the 2010 FIFA World Cup but did not make the final roster.
