Manfred Honeck can be described as an Austrian conductor and he was born on September 17, 1958. As of now, he is the music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
It must be noted that Manfred Honeck was born in Nenzing near the border of Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
He was one of the nine children of his parents; Otto and Frieda Honeck. Rainer Honeck, the Vienna Philharmonic concertmaster is a brother to Manfred Honeck. Concerning education, Manfred had his musical training at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
He began as a violinist and also learned to play the viola. Manfred Honeck was quite active in the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera Orchestra. Manfred Honeck served as an assistant to Claudio Abbado so far as conducting was concerned with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. He formed the Vienna Jeunesse Orchestra in 1987.
Between 1991 and 1996, Manfred Honeck served as a conductor at the Zurich Opera House. He was awarded the European Conductor’s Award in 1993 and between 1997 and 1998, he was the Music Director of the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo, among other positions. He was also the Music Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony orchestra between 2000 and 2006.
He served as the Principal Guest Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra between 2008 and 2011. For over 20 years, Manfred Honeck has been the Artistic Director of the International Concerts Wolfegg in Germany.In the 2007/2008 season, Manfred became the General Music Director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart.
Manfred received the honorary title of Professor by the Austrian Federal President in 2016. He also has three Honorary Doctorates from Carnegie Mellon University, the Catholic University of America, as well as Saint Vincent College. He was named Artist of the Year by the International Classical Music Awards in 2018 and on January 28, 2018, he received the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance with PSO. This was in respect of their recording of Shostakovich Symphony No.5 and Barber Adagio for Strings.
Manfred is married to Christiane and they have six children. He lives in the village of Altach and he is a Christian, a Roman Catholic to be precise.
