Lupu Pick was born in Iași, Romania on January 2, 1886 Pick’s career underwent a dramatic change in 1910 when he ventured into the then-developing film industry. Due to his talent, he was able to work on a number of film projects as both an actor and a director, including Fritz Lang, Richard Oswald, and Gerhard Lamprecht.
A turning point in Pick’s career came in 1917 when he started Rex-Film, his own production firm. This decision gave him the freedom to express his creativity and the platform to utilize his movies to promote social problems. In 1919, Pick showed his dedication to justice by tackling the death penalty in his motion picture “Miséricordia.”
Pick explored Kammerspiel films and teamed up with screenwriter Carl Mayer, an association that would prove crucial to German filmmaking. These films demonstrated Pick’s commitment to examining complex themes, with their intimate locations and psychological depth. The partnership produced two notable pieces, “The Rail” (1921) and “New Year’s Eve” (1924).
With his silent film “La Fin de Napoléon à Sainte-Hélène” (Napoleon auf St. Helena), Pick made his first entry into historical and psychological storytelling in 1929. The movie, which was adapted from an Abel Gance screenplay, not only demonstrated Pick’s skill as a filmmaker but also his fascination in exploring complex tales.
Pick had to adjust to the technological change that came with the advent of sound cinema. He made his sole sound picture with the Comedian Harmonists in 1931. Two translations were produced from this endeavor: “Les Quatre Vagabonds” in French and “Gassenhauer” in German.
