Liberty German’s Biography
Liberty German, born on December 27, 2002, was a young girl whose life was tragically cut short on February 13, 2017.
Together with her friend, Abigail Williams, they were the victims of a horrible murder that shocked Delphi, Indiana, and drew national attention.
Liberty, often known as Libby, and Abby were let out on the Monon High Bridge trail by Libby’s older sister on that fateful day.
The girls set out on a walk, taking in the scenic surroundings of woodland in distant Deer Creek Township. At 2:07 p.m., Libby posted a photo of Abby walking on the bridge, which would be their last sighting before they vanished.
Concern increased among family members as the hours passed with no sign of the girls. The alarm was sounded, and a search was launched, spearheaded by the families themselves before being joined by local enforcement.
Unfortunately, their worst fears were realised when the bodies of Libby and Abby were discovered near the abandoned Monon High Bridge about noon the next day.
The deaths of Libby and Abby prompted a high-profile inquiry that captivated the entire country. Law authorities disclosed video and audio recordings obtained on Libby’s smartphone, which proved important in identifying the killer.
The grainy footage of a Caucasian male walking on the train bridge was identified as the primary suspect in their killings.
Several developments resulted from the inquiry over the years. A new sketch of the suspect was issued in April 2019, along with a call for the public’s assistance in identifying him.
Authorities suspected he was lurking in plain sight and was familiar with the Delphi area. The case remained unsolved until October 2022, when a suspect was apprehended.
The arrest gave relief to the town and the families of Libby and Abby, who had waited nearly six years for justice. The defendant was later charged with two charges of murder but pleaded not guilty.
The defence requested that the trial be postponed, which was originally planned for March 2023. Two public defenders were assigned to represent the accused.
Libby and Abby’s memory has been kept alive through different monuments and activities in the years since the awful tragedy. Orange lights were put on porches around central Indiana as an homage to the girls and a warning that the perpetrator was still at large.
In addition, plans were developed to construct Abby and Libby Memorial Park, a sports complex to commemorate their lives and provide a venue for the community to enjoy nature, art, play, and athleticism.
