Kersten Meier was born on February 23, 1954, in Celle, Germany. Meier came from modest beginnings when it came to swimming. Meier participated in the 4 × 100-meter freestyle relay in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, putting his skills on full show. Meier and his colleagues showed perseverance and collaboration in the face of fierce competition, placing sixth in the final with honors.
Meier’s greatest achievement was in 1974 in Vienna during the European Championships, where he made swimming history. In the hotly contested 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay, Meier won the European championship title with Peter Nocke, Gerhard Schiller, and Klaus Steinbach. Meier’s status as one of Germany’s most formidable swimmers was cemented with the win.
Meier’s outstanding performance at the 1975 World Championships in Cali, Colombia, demonstrated that his accomplishments were recognized on a worldwide scale. Meier finished second in the fiercely fought 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay, just losing out on the gold to the United States relay team, with Klaus Steinbach, Dirk Braunleder, and Peter Nocke.
Meier unfortunately lost his life after plunging from Düsseldorf’s Theodor Heuss Bridge.
