Jürgen Claus was a German visual artist and author. He was born on May 28, 1935 in Berlin. He worked in various techniques such as painting, film, light, solar installations and especially underwater art so far as his work as a visual artist was concerned.
He had his studies at the University of Munich and other universities and read theater studies. In 1967, Jürgen Claus developed environmental art that incorporated the sea, water and sun. He served as an artistic assistant at the Summer Olympics in Munich from 1969 to 1972.
Jürgen Claus also worked as a fellow and research affiliate at CAVS/MIT, Cambridge, USA from 1983 to 1988. He was appointed teacher for art, technology and the environment at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1986.
He also taught as a professor of media art at the Cologne Academy of Media Arts and this was from 1991 till 2000. Later in 2011, Jürgen Claus became a scholarship holder of the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) in Karlsruhe.

Jürgen Claus died on September 5, 2023, in Aachen. He was 88 years old. The cause of death is not yet known.

Jürgen Claus undertook so many exhibitions. He organized some of the exhibitions by himself and for others, he was part of a group that undertook the exhibitions. Some of his solo exhibitions include Gallery S Ben Wargin, Berlin 1963 (catalog), Galerie Kümmel, Cologne 1968 (leaflet), Klaus Lüpcke Gallery, Frankfurt 1968, Kunsthalle Nuremberg 1975 (catalog) and University of the Arts, Osaka (Japan) 1975.

Awards, Prizes, Scholarships
Bonn Art Fund Foundation 1983, Institute for Foreign Relations Stuttgart 1987, Prix Lago Maggiore, Videoart Festival Locarno 1988 and European Solar Prize, Freiburg 1995 (with Nora Claus) are some of the awards to the credit of Jürgen Claus.
