José Carreras was born on December 5, 1946, and can be described as a singer, composer and conductor of Spanish. José Carreras was the brain behind the Josep Carreras Foundation against Leukemia in 1988. The foundation had the focus to the cure of Leukemia.
It must be noted that from the childhood days of José Carreras, he showed interest in music as he sang to the passengers of the ship on which he moved to Buenos Aires, where he lived with his family in 1951, in the city of Villa Ballester.
At age 8, he sang La donna è mobile on Spanish radio and at age 11, he also made an appearance for the first time at the Barcelona Lyceum. He played the part of a narrator of the opera of Manuel de FallaThe altarpiece of Maese Pedro. With respect to education, José Carreras studied chemistry but he switched to music at the Liceo Superior Conservatory of Music. In 1970, he played roles in Nabucco and in the opera Norma and got the attention of the soprano Montserrat Caballé.
Montserrat Caballé subsequently invited him to sing during the production of Lucrezia Borgia. José Carreras performed Maria Stuarda in with Montserrat Caballé in 1971. It must be noted that at age 28, José Carreras had already performed and sung 24 different operas.
He performed Don Carlo in the Salzburg Festival in 1978. He recorded the “operatic version” from West Side Story in 1984 in the role of Tony opposite the soprano Kiri Te Kanawa, a version composed and conducted by Leonard Bernstein.
He won a Grammy Award in 1985 for his efforts. José Carreras received the Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Catalonia in 1984 and in 1986, he played the role of tenor Julián Gayarre in the film Final Romance (Gayarre), directed by José María Forqué.
He was diagnosed with leukemia lymphoblastic in 1987 and he resumed his artistic career after treatments that involved radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and an auto-transplant marrow. Some awards he has won include the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts and the Medal of Honor from the Parliament of Catalonia.
José Carreras has to his credit over 120 official recordings including complete operas, as well as popular songs, film classics, Christmas songs, light music, sacred music, musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber , tango, masses and oratorios.
