John Mulaney Biography

John Edmund Mulaney is an accomplished and talented American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer.

Mulaney, who was born on August 26, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois, began his comedy career as a writer for the iconic NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live (SNL) from 2008 until 2013.

Mulaney made substantial contributions to SNL during his tenure, including the invention of notable characters like Stefon, which he co-created with Bill Hader.

Mulaney returned to SNL several times after departing, eventually achieving the prestigious honour of becoming a member of the SNL Five-Timers Club in 2022.

Mulaney has published a number of successful stand-up specials in addition to his work on SNL, including “The Top Part” in 2009, “New in Town” in 2012, “The Comeback Kid” in 2015, “Kid Gorgeous” in 2018, and “Baby J” slated to be released in 2023.

In 2018, his special “Kid Gorgeous” won him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.

His maternal great-grandparents were the Republican mayor of Salem, Massachusetts, George J. Bates, and Nora Jennings, who emigrated to the United States from Ballyhaunis, County Mayo.

Mulaney’s parents both attended Georgetown University and Yale Law School, where they met future President Bill Clinton. Mulaney recalls meeting Clinton in 1992 with fondness.

Mulaney’s fascination with the show industry began from a young age. Mulaney, who was inspired by the character Ricky Ricardo on the television show “I Love Lucy,” realized he wanted to be an entertainer as early as the age of five.
