Career
Peterka’s professional career took off with EHC Red Bull München in the DEL. During the 2019-2020 season, he showcased his talent by playing in 42 games, scoring 7 goals and 4 assists for a total of 11 points. His outstanding performance did not go unnoticed, leading to his selection by the Buffalo Sabres as the 34th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
Scouts had high hopes for Peterka, initially projecting him as a first-round pick. Peterka’s NHL debut came on December 29, 2021, in a game against the New Jersey Devils. Following the game, he was sent back to the AHL’s Rochester Americans. Nevertheless, he left an impression with his talent and determination.
In the 2022-2023 NHL season, Peterka notched his first career NHL goal in the Sabres’ season opener against the Ottawa Senators, contributing to a 4-1 victory on October 13, 2022.
Peterka’s talents extend beyond the NHL; he has also made significant contributions to the German national team. He made his international debut with the German U18 national team at the 2019 IIHF World U18 Championship Division I.
Peterka continued to represent Germany on the national junior team at the 2020 and 2021 World Junior Championships. His progression in international play culminated in joining the senior national team at the 2021 World Championships.
In a historic turn of events at the 2023 IIHF World Championship, Peterka and Team Germany stunned the world by reaching the gold medal game. They defeated the heavily favored Team USA in the semi-final. Although Germany ultimately fell to Team Canada, earning the silver medal, it was the nation’s first silver at the World Championships since 1953.
Peterka’s exceptional performance earned him the IIHF directorate award for Best Forward, and he was named to the Media All-Star Team with six goals and six assists in ten games.
