Johanna André’s Biography
German soprano Johanna André was well-known for her passionate and forceful performances in concert and opera. Being the daughter of the renowned grand ducal court opera singer Anton André, she was destined for a career in music from her birth on June 30, 1861, in Bad Doberan.
After receiving voice training in Berlin, André debuted on stage as Ännchen in Weber’s Der Freischütz at the Kroll Opera in 1875.
Her talent was soon discovered, and she was invited to perform at the Darmstadt Court Theatre and then the Stadttheater Bremen. She began working with Franz Abt’s Braunschweig Court Theatre in 1877 and remained there for almost thirty years, retiring in 1906.
Famous parts by composers like Weber, Wagner, Mozart, and Beethoven were among those in André’s repertory. She played some of the best Wagnerian parts, including Senta, Isolde, and Brünnhilde. She also took part in the 1882 Bayreuth Festival world premiere of Wagner’s Parsifal.
Apart from her theatrical profession, André was a well-liked vocal instructor in Braunschweig. At the age of 64, she died on June 23, 1926, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most prominent sopranos of her era.
