Who Was James Buchanan?

James Buchanan was an American lawyer, politician, diplomat and a former president of the United States of America.

He was born on April 23, 1791 in a log cabin in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania and rose to become the 15th president of the United States, serving from 1857 to 1861.

His father was a merchant, real estate investor and farmer which made him the richest person in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. His mother, Elizabeth Speer on the other hand was a homemaker.

Buchanan was the second child of his parents but his bad behavior nearly got him expelled from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. However, he asked for mercy and turned a new leaf. He eventually graduated in 1809 as one of the best students of his class.

He then went on to establish himself as a top lawyer in Lancaster and set up his own law firm in 1821 and had a number of high profile clients including Pennsylvania judge, Walter Franklin.

However, even before he started his law firm in 1821, Buchanan had already started doing politics and was a member of the Federalist Party. He then served as a member of Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1814 to 1816.

He later served as member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania from March 4, 1821 to March 3, 1831. During that time, he served as the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

Before becoming the 15th president of the United States in 1857, Buchanan served as 20th United States Minister to the United Kingdom, 17th United States Secretary of State, 5th United States Minister to Russia, etc.

Buchanan was a Freemason and rose to the rank of a Master of Masonic Lodge No. 43 in Lancaster. He also became a District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania.

He died on June 1, 1868 at the age of 77  due to respiratory failure in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
