Biography

Jakob Tiedtke was born on June 23, 1875, in Berlin. Jakob Tiedtke’s early exposure to the world of literature and performance laid the foundation for his future endeavors. His father’s association with magazines such as Kladderadatsch and Flying Sheets hinted at the creative milieu that surrounded young Tiedtke.

Tiedtke attended the Kรถllnisches Gymnasium before beginning his studies at the Marie Seebach School of the Royal Theater in Berlin, which marked the beginning of his artistic career. He made his stage debut at the Royal Theater in 1899, playing Cato in Julius Caesar. In his formative years, Tiedtke was a vital member of the Prussian Court Theater group until 1905.

Tiedtke refined his technique and broadened his repertory in the Deutsches Theater from 1905 until 1913 under the direction of Max Reinhardt. He next appeared on stage at the Deutsches Kรผnstlertheater Societรคt in 1913. He then did spells at the famed Burgtheater in Vienna from 1915 to 1918, as well as the Lessingtheater. Due to his talent, Tiedtke performed on several Berlin stages until 1925. From 1933 until 1945, he was a member of the Berliner Volksbรผhne ensemble.

Tiedtke became involved with the Comradeship of German Artists during the turbulent Nazi era and joined the Nazi leadership corps as a member of the presidential advisory council. Tiedtke persisted in playing well-known theatrical roles such as Franz Moor in The Robbers, Mephisto in Faust, and Iago in Othello despite the difficult political climate.

In 1907, Tiedtke simultaneously adopted the new medium of cinema, launching a successful career in motion pictures. He frequently appeared in comedic or odd parts and worked closely with well-known filmmakers like Ernst Lubitsch. But Veit Harlan’s propaganda movies are also included in his resume; in 1940, he starred in the contentious anti-Semitic movie Jud SรผรŸ.

In a dramatic turn of events during the final phase of World War II, Joseph Goebbels included Tiedtke in the God-given list of actors needed for propaganda films, freeing him from military service. This unique acknowledgment underscored the extent of Tiedtke’s influence even in the turbulent times of the war

Post-World War II, Tiedtke, along with fellow actors, founded the “Bad Ischl Artists’ Association,” embarking on a two-year tour through Austria. The 1950s saw him perform in prominent theaters such as Munich, Berlin, and the Thalia Theater in Hamburg alongside Willy Maertens.
