Early Life
Born on May 31, 2001, in Warsaw to Dorota and Tomasz Świątek, Iga Świątek hails from a sporting family. Her father, a former Olympic rower, aimed for his daughters to excel in individual sports for better control over their success. Iga’s older sister, Agata, initially pursued swimming but switched to tennis, inspiring Iga to follow suit. Iga, motivated by sibling rivalry and admiration, transitioned to tennis at the age of 14. Starting her training at Mera Warsaw, she later moved to Legia Warsaw to further develop her tennis skills.
Career
Świątek proudly donned the Polish colors at the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals for 14-and-under girls in both 2014 and 2015. Despite her lack of experience on the WTA Tour before 2019, Świątek made a remarkable debut in tour-level events that year. While she couldn’t qualify for the Auckland Open, she secured a spot in the main draw at the Australian Open.
Seeded 15th at the Australian Open, Świątek showcased her talent by defeating opponents like Arantxa Rus, Camila Giorgi, and Fiona Ferro, reaching the fourth round where she faced Simona Halep. Although she lost in three sets, her performance marked a significant step in her career. Following this, at the Adelaide event, she clinched her first WTA Tour title without dropping a set, defeating Belinda Bencic in the final and entering the top 15 for the first time in March 2021.
In 2022, at the WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, Świątek dominated the group stage, defeating Daria Kasatkina, Caroline Garcia, and Coco Gauff without dropping a set. Despite a setback in the semifinals against Aryna Sabalenka, she concluded the season as the year-end no.1 player with an impressive 67–9 win-loss record in 2022, the highest since Serena Williams in 2013.
