Il Volo, meaning “The Flight” in Italian, is an operatic pop trio that has taken the music world by storm with its enchanting blend of classical and pop elements.
The group comprises three talented members: Gianluca Ginoble, Piero Barone, and Ignazio Boschetto. They fondly refer to their musical style as “popera,” seamlessly merging the worlds of pop and opera to create a unique and captivating sound.
Who Are The Il Volo?
The adventure of the three began in 2009, when they competed in the Italian television singing competition Ti lascio una canzone. Individually, Gianluca, Piero, and Ignazio demonstrated exceptional voice ability, but fate intervened during the fourth episode. Director Roberto Cenci envisioned a trio similar to The Three Tenors and brought together the three young actors. Il Volo was born as a result of this relationship.
Their rendition of the Neapolitan classic “‘O sole mio” piqued the interest of Italian singer-songwriter and music producer Tony Renis, who was visiting Los Angeles at the time. Renis brokered a meeting with Geffen Records after being impressed by their abilities, making Il Volo the first Italian performer to sign directly with an American recording label.
Under the direction of manager Michele Torpedine, the trio’s name evolved from “I Tre Tenorini” to “The Tryo” before landing on the iconic “Il Volo.”
Il Volo began work on their debut studio album in 2010, which was recorded at London’s famed Abbey Road Studios. The self-titled album, produced by Tony Renis and Humberto Gatica, included a mix of foreign and Italian standards as well as original songs. When it was released in Italy in November 2010, the album quickly rose to number six on the Italian Albums Chart and was certified platinum.
In April 2011, the international edition of “Il Volo” debuted in the United States, along with a memorable performance on the American Idol finale.
The album debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and quickly rose to the top of the Classical Albums chart. Their first hit, “‘O sole mio,” was well received by audiences, confirming their international renown.
In order to broaden their appeal, Il Volo released a Spanish version of the album in June 2011, named “Il Volo (Edición en Espaol).” This version was a big hit in Mexico and the United States, where it topped the Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart. The group’s accomplishments resulted in two nominations for Best New Artist and Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 12th Latin Grammy Awards.
Piero Barone, a Spinto tenor with a dramatic sound; Ignazio Boschetto, a lyric tenor with a clear and bright timbre; and Gianluca Ginoble, a lyric baritone with a warm timbre and a varied vocal range, are all members of Il Volo.
Their vocals soar together, enthralling audiences around the world with the timeless beauty of their popera masterpieces. Il Volo continues to fly to new heights, demonstrating the power of love, talent, and the universal language of song.
