According to Hon.Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa; MP for North Tongu constituency, the government wouldn’t have been in a state of having to impose the obnoxious and infamous e-levy should they have managed the economy well.
While speaking on GTV’s Breakfast show, the MP indicated that the proposed e-levy is obnoxious and regressive. He also emphasized that the government had engaged in unnecessary expenditure which has led them to this state. “If you manage your economy well, if you’re prudent and fugal and if you cut down your expenditure, you wouldn’t need to be introducing new regressive and obnoxious multiple taxations and wouldn’t need IMF”, he stated.
Mr.Ablakwa also made reference to countries like Rwanda. According to him, Rwanda never resorted to e-levy and IMF as a source of development. His assertions were responses to the government’s claim of only having e-levy or IMF as options.
“If the economy had been managed properly; we are doing well, we have grown this economy, we are creating jobs, we have transformed this society like President Kagare did in Rwanda, he didn’t have to introduce e-levy or go to IMF”, he added.
The e-levy bill was introduced during the submission of the 2022 budget by the finance minister as the only alternative to help Ghana generate revenue and also avoid aid from The International Monetary Fund (IMF).
