Biography
Ida Ehre was born on July 9, 1900, in Prerau (Moravia) into a family of six children. Sadly, her father died when she was only two years old, leaving her mother to rely only on her sewing to sustain the family.
Ehre’s career took off after her debut at the Bielitz City Theater, taking her to theaters across Central and Eastern Europe, including Stuttgart, Czernowitz, and Budapest. But since she was Jewish and could not work, the dark shadow of the Nazi period hovered over her career.
Ehre took comfort in his job as a medical assistant during this trying time. When World War II broke out, her effort to emigrate to Chile was foiled, and she was taken into custody by the Gestapo and imprisoned in the Fuhlsbüttel concentration camp.
Ida Ehre’s ability and dedication flowered again after the war. She breathed new life into a theatrical facility utilized by the Jewish Cultural Association before its “Aryanization” during the Nazi dictatorship by opening the Hamburger Kammerspiele in 1945. Under her direction, the Kammerspiele, which featured contemporary pieces by well-known authors, rose to prominence in German theater.
Ehre’s influence was felt off-stage as well. She dabbled in radio, television, and cinema, showcasing her flexibility and enthralling listeners in a variety of media. Several honors were given to her in recognition of her commitment to the arts, including the Federal Cross of Merit for her support of freedom and peace.
