Prayer is a communion between GOD and man. Prayer is an act of faith; meaning anyone who says a prayer to God has faith in Him to answer their prayer.
God loves all mankind, and we are all his children. He wants everyone to bring before him their heart desire, but how? Through prayer.
We do not pray to only make our request known to the Father, but we pray for these reasons too:
Reasons Why We Pray
- To Praise God’s name
Psalm 105: 1-3 “ Give praise to the Lord proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him , sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice.”
- To keep us from sin
Matthew 26: 41 “watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak”
- To know God’s will for our live
1 Peter 5:10 “And the God of all grace , who called you into his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”
- To receive blessings from God
1 Chronicles 4: 10 “ Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘ oh that you will bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain. And God granted his request.”
- To receive healing from our disease and sicknesses
James 5: 14-15 “is anyone among you ill? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven”
- To defeat Satan
Luke 22: 31-32 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your strengh may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
- To save sinners
2Timothy 2:25-26 “Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.”
- For Wisdom
James 1:5 “if any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all, without finding fault, and it will be given to you”
- To have God’s perfect peace
Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which trancends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds through Christ Jesus.”
These and many more reasons why we pray.
What is Praying in the Spirit?
Some people teaches that, praying in the spirit is praying in tongues. Praying in the spirit is different from praying in tongues, though they have a link.
Lets talk about praying in the spirit, then we’ll also talk about praying in tongues to help you understand it better.
Praying in the Spirit simply means depending on the Lord’s Holy Spirit in prayer. It is a prayer that employs the Holy Spirit.
Praying in the Spirit involves one’s spirit, soul and heart and with much fervency, with the Holy Spirit being the influence.
Romans 8:26-27
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
This verse here clearly teaches us how the Holy Spirit help us to pray. We can also say that praying In the spirit is praying in accordance to God’s will, and that is exactly what the Spirit helps us in doing.
How To Pray In the Spirit
I hope this guide goes a long way to help you pray in the Spirit. But before that, make sure you have Christ as your Lord and Personal Savior.
Now how do you pray in the spirit?
- Find a serene place to offer your prayer (prayer can be said everywhere, I mean to say that make sure you are not disturbed or interrupted).
- Do not rush.
- Focus on God. See Him as your father (because he is)
- Reflect on a scripture. Say a scripture that speaks of God’s goodness or concerning what you want to pray about.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to help you pray.
- Thank the Lord and acknowledge Him.
- Confess your faults or mistakes or your failures (be sincere about it.) At this moment, you will feel the heaviness at the place of prayer, as though you are with a whole congregation. You faith will be on. You will become strong. Your hope will come up. You will have joy in your heart. And more.
- Make your request known to God
- Pray for others and programs or events
- Believe God for an answered prayer by thanking Him.
- Don’t forget to pray in Jesus’ name!!!

Acts 2: 1-4
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them”
This very verse in Acts 2:1-4 tells us how the Holy Spirit came and fill the believers and gave them the utterance to speak in tongues.
