Hermann Vallentin emerged as a prominent German actor whose life’s narrative wove through the vibrant tapestry of the theatrical world, only to be disrupted by the upheavals of the 20th century, marked by political turmoil and forced emigration.

Biography

Hermann Vallentin was born on May 24, 1872, in Berlin, into a Jewish family. Vallentin’s sister, Rosa Valetti, also pursued a career in acting. Following training at the Royal Theatre in Berlin under the guidance of Max Grube and Hans Oberländer, Vallentin embarked on his theatrical journey. His inaugural engagement came in the 1895/96 season at the Central Theatre in Berlin, setting the stage for a career that would span both stage and screen.

Vallentin performed at other Berlin venues in the years that followed, displaying his skill and adaptability. From fatherly figures and patriarchs to directors and narrow-minded philistines, his repertory grew to include a variety of characters.

Hermann Vallentin’s 1914 entry into the film industry was a major step forward in his creative development. With his representations of strong, fatherly roles, he had a successful cinematic career. The uniform tailor Adolph Wormser was portrayed by Vallentin in the 1931 film adaption of “Der Hauptmann von Köpenick.”

The emergence of National Socialism in 1933 clouded Vallentin’s attempts to make movies. His cinematic career was abruptly stopped by the regime’s discriminating practices, which forced him to go overseas. After leaving for Czechoslovakia in 1933, Vallentin continued to contribute to German-language stages in cities such as Östí and Prague.

In 1938, with the political scene still changing, Vallentin fled to Switzerland. He continued his acting career in the Schauspielhaus Zürich and the Stadttheater Basel. But in 1939, the winds of change carried him to Mandatory Palestine, where he settled in Tel Aviv to begin a new chapter in his life.

In Tel Aviv, Vallentin faced the challenge of adapting to a new linguistic landscape, retiring from acting due to his limited command of Hebrew. Undeterred, he engaged with the cultural milieu by lecturing, reading poetry, and sporadically anchoring German-language news on the Palestine Broadcasting Service (PBS).

Hermann Vallentin passed away in Tel Aviv in 1945, at the age of 73.
