Herbert Feuerstein was a well-known German journalist, comedian, and performer of Austrian heritage. He was born in Zell am See, Austria, on June 15, 1937.

As the editor of Mad in German and the publisher of the pardon satire magazine, he became well-known. Feuerstein’s humorous abilities were evident on television, especially when he worked with Harald Schmidt on programmes such as Schmidteinander.

Feuerstein’s artistic career started in 1956 when he studied composition, harpsichord, and piano at the Salzburg Mozarteum. But for disparaging the institution’s president, he was dismissed. Feuerstein moved to New York in 1960 with his partner, a guest student from Hawaii, and they got married there.

It was at this point that he started his journalistic career. He was a correspondent for several German and Austrian media sources, notably the satirical magazine Pardon, and an editor for the German-language weekly New Yorker Staats-Zeitung.

Following his divorce and return to Europe in 1969, Feuerstein worked as a director for Bรคrmeier & Nikel, a publishing business that published works such as Pardon. When he became editor of Mad in Germany in 1973, the magazine’s circulation increased dramatically from 10,000 to 400,000 copies.

Feuerstein’s work on television, especially his collaborations with Harald Schmidt, was what made him famous. In programmes like Pssst… and Schmidteinander, their comic chemistry delighted audiences.

Feuerstein won the 1994 Bambi television award thanks to his skill and creativity.

Feuerstein dabbled in film in addition to television; in 1995, he starred in the TV film Entfรผhrung aus der LindenstraรŸe. In 1997 and 1998, he also served as the host of Feuersteins Nacht, a twelve-hour live TV programme for WDR. Feuerstein even provided the voice of Gilbert Huph in the German translation of Pixar’s The Incredibles.

Feuerstein was a versatile performer who also made appearances on stage, playing the role of Frosch in Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus at the Cologne Opera from 2004 until 2008.

Feuerstein, who was born in Austria, changed his nationality to Germany in 1990. At the age of 83, he passed away in Erftstadt, leaving a legacy of innovation and humour.
