One of the pioneers of Austrian film, Hanus Heinz, was a director, screenwriter, and occasionally acting actor who made significant contributions to the development of Austrian cinema in the silent film period.

Biography

Heinz Hanus was born on May 24, 1882, in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, and died on March 16, 1972, in Bad Aussee, Austria. Heinz Hanus, a silk hat maker’s son, began his professional life creating patterns and designs for silk textiles. His early passion for the arts brought him to private theater companies, where he developed his acting abilities. Unfortunately, paint poisoning forced him to quit his first job, so he went on to work as an architectural draftsman. Hanus worked on several prestigious projects, such as the GP Chédune-designed French embassy in Vienna.

He made the switch to acting in theaters full-time in 1906. His career as an actor took off, and by 1909 he was starring with Egon Friedell at the popular Viennese cabaret Fledermaus, where he was portraying the “bad student Züst” in a show called “Goethe.” At the Viennese café “Dobner,” he first met Anton Kolm, who would go on to become a director and producer, at this time. This was the start of his filmmaking career.

Hanus’s significant contribution to Austrian film history started in 1907 when Anton Kolm hired him to work on “From Level to Level,” which was billed as the country’s first full-length feature picture. But as there is no proof that the movie has ever been seen, historical documents cast doubt on its existence. Hanus emerged as one of the forerunners of Austrian cinema despite this ambiguity.

He directed theater in several minor places around the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in addition to his work in film. He established the Filmbund in 1922 and became a founding member of the organization, which served as an interest group for all Austrian filmmakers, further establishing his power. A large number of his films were directed at Vienna’s Astoria-Film, which was notable for having its animation section.
