Heinz Erhardt’s Biography
German comedian, musician, composer, actor, and poet Heinz Erhardt was a multidimensional performer who enjoyed considerable success in all of these genres.
Erhardt was born on February 20, 1909, in Riga, Russian Empire. His father, German-Baltic bandmaster and composer Gustav Hans Erhardt, was also an educator. He was raised by his maternal grandparents in Riga, where he grew to appreciate music in general and piano in particular.
Erhardt changed schools a lot during his schooling, but in the end he attended a German high school in Riga. He did, however, drop out of school to follow his love of music at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied composition and the piano.
His grandparents made him an apprentice in their music store because they wanted him to get business training despite his love and talent for the piano.
Erhardt wed Gilda Zanetti in 1935; she was the former Italian consul in Saint Petersburg’s daughter. Together, they had four children, and Marek Erhardt, their grandson, went on to pursue careers in acting and voice acting.
Erhardt started his career selling recorders and pianos in his grandfather’s art and music store. In Riga’s coffee shops, he also sang his humorous songs. He was a piano player for the symphony in the Navy during World War II.
Erhardt relocated to Hamburg-Wellingsbรผttel following the war, where he was employed by NWDR as a radio host. His composition “10-Pfennig Opera” and programme “So Was Dummes” helped him become well-known.
He later enjoyed considerable success in the motion picture industry, playing charming but slightly perplexed family men in comedy.
Puns and contorted language were hallmarks of Erhardt’s humour, and he was recognised for his characteristic bald head and horn-rimmed glasses. Erhardt’s health declined in the late 1960s despite his success, and he had a stroke in 1971 that severely impaired his ability to speak.
At the age of 70, he passed away on June 5, 1979, and was laid to rest in the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg.
