Heike Gabriela Drechsler, born on December 16, 1964, in Gera, East Germany (now Thuringia, Germany). Many people consider Drechsler to be among the greatest long jumpers in history. She holds the previous world record and is ranked third all-time with her legal best of 7.48 meters, which she accomplished in 1988. Remarkably, her 1992 wind-assisted long jump of 7.63 meters still stands as the record for the farthest jump a woman has made.
She is the only woman to have clinched two Olympic gold medals in the long jump, triumphing in 1992 and 2000. Additionally, she secured Olympic medals in the 100 meters and 200 meters in 1988. Her accolades also include two World Championships in the long jump (1983 and 1993) and gold medals in the long jump and 200-meter sprint in the 1987 World Indoor Championships.
Throughout her career, Drechsler showcased her versatility by excelling in both sprinting and jumping events. In 1986, she equaled Marita Koch’s 200-meter sprint world record twice and set two long jump world records, along with equalling one in 1985 and 1986. Her remarkable improvement in sprint times, from 11.75 seconds to 10.91 seconds in the 100 meters and from 23.19 seconds to 21.71 seconds in the 200 meters during the 1986 season.
Drechsler’s outstanding achievements earned her widespread recognition, including a Star of People’s Friendship in gold for her sporting success in 1986. While she was a contender for the “Athlete of the Century” title by the IAAF in 1999, the award ultimately went to Fanny Blankers-Koen.
