Hans-Ulrich Klose was born on June 14, 1937, and he was a German politician. Hans-Ulrich Klose was a member of the Social Democratic Party(SDP) and served as a member of the German Federal Parliament (German: Bundestag).

He was also the first mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. This was from 1974 to 1981. Hans-Ulrich Klose also served as President of the Bundesrat from 1979 to 1980. He was born in  Breslau, Province of Lower Silesia and his family fled from Breslau to  Bielefeld after the end of  World War II.

Concerning education, Hans-Ulrich Klose had his high school diploma in 1957. He furthered his education and studied law at the Universities of Freiburg and Hamburg. He passed the first and second Legal State Examination in 1961 and 1965 respectively and then started working as a lawyer in Hamburg, Germany.

Hans-Ulrich Klose joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1964 and became a member of the Hamburg Parliament six years later. He also became the first chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and in October 1973, he took over from Heinz Ruhnau as minister of the interior of Hamburg.

Due to an internal argument concerning the construction of the Brokdorf Nuclear Power Plant, Hans-Ulrich Klose on May 25, 1981, resigned as Mayor (Erster Bürgermeister) of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

He was the treasurer of the Social Democratic Party(SDP) from 1987 to 1991. Hans-Ulrich Klose was included in the shadow cabinet of the Social Democratic Party(SDP) to unseat incumbent Helmut Kohl as Chancellor under the chairmanship of Rudolf Scharping ahead of the 1994 elections.

He became chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in 1998 and served as the Vice President of the Committee on Foreign Affairs from 2002. Hans-Ulrich Klose chaired the German-American Parliamentary Friendship Group. He was also appointed government’s coordinator for German-American affairs, on March 16, 2010, but later resigned in 2011.

Hans-Ulrich Klose died on September 6, 2023. He died as a result of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 86 years old at the time of his death.
