Oswald Karch developed a passion for racing at a young age and began his career by creating his racing car, the ‘Eigenbau Special’. However, he eventually purchased a Veritas Meteor from Karl Kling, which was a watershed moment in his racing career.
Karch competed in several German F2 races with his Veritas and obtained good results. He finished sixth in the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring and fourth on the Grenzlandring.
These accomplishments earned him a spot in the 1952 World Championship Grand Prix, where he drove his Veritas. Despite not scoring any championship points, he finished in eleventh place, demonstrating his talent and determination.
Karch’s most notable achievement came when he collaborated with Karl Kling at Mercedes. They won the difficult Carrera Panamericana race in 1952, completing a rigorous 1923-mile track across Mexico.
Despite suffering adversity during the race, such as a collision with a vulture that knocked him out, Karch’s strong attitude carried him to victory.
However, catastrophe struck in 1953, when Karch fractured his thigh and knee while testing a Mercedes 300SL at the legendary Nürburgring circuit. This sad tragedy compelled him to quit racing.
He used his enthusiasm for vehicles to manage a successful car preparation business in Stuttgart until the 1970s when he decided to retire.
