Houston was driving south on Galena when she attempted to make a left turn onto Hyman Avenue and collided with Hannah. The collision swept the small child behind the SUV, pinning her beneath the back passenger wheel.
First responders responded promptly and took Hannah to Aspen Valley Hospital in the hopes of saving her life. Despite their best attempts, Hannah succumbed to her injuries and died that afternoon at 1 p.m. The unexpected death of her daughter shocked the neighbourhood, leaving everyone heartbroken and devastated.
Authorities investigating the event decided that Houston was not intoxicated. As a result, she was charged with careless driving causing death, a class one misdemeanour traffic offence.
This offence carries a potential jail sentence of 10 days to a year in county jail. Despite the fact that the driver’s actions were deemed sloppy, prosecutors found no evidence of carelessness or intent.
